The Fall

I saw bees fall from the sky:
crashing into windows – posts – walls.
I witnessed each one in private struggle:
for flight – for buoyancy – for grace.
Down they came – grasping for that
which once came – effortlessly.
Curled-up between chucks of gravel,
yellow-black corpses – haphazardly strewed
resemble victims from last night’s news.
Bodies laid out in a mangled alphabet
by someone who speaks
through metal shards and phosphorus.

Faintly heard above traffic-drone
feet tread over this fresh-air graveyard.
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch
I imagine the crispness of fresh snow
giving way to weight it was never designed to bear.

Escape

Her language wraps its arms around me,
the way a jealous lover squeezes
her obsession close,
an intoxicating strength
that smothers rational thought,
even as a small voice whispers ‘escape.’

But I have no desire to escape.
It is a long fall
and I want to see how it ends.
